Several people are in custody after a report of drug activity in the west Valley turned into a human trafficking investigation.

It started at about 8 p.m. Wednesday when police responded to reports of drug activity in a neighborhood just north of 67th Avenue and McDowell Road.

“Several suspects fled as police arrived,” Sgt. Jonathan Howard of the Phoenix Police Department explained Thursday morning. “One man was detained and found to be unlawfully in possession of a firearm.”

But it did not stop there.

When police went into the home in question, they discovered 22 people inside.

“Homeland Security Investigations responded to assist and investigate what appeared to be conduct related to human trafficking,” Howard said.

Photos from the scene showed several people in handcuffs being put into a law enforcement vehicle.

No other information about the incident was immediately available.
