Electric carmaker Atieva building manufacturing plant in Arizona

Electric carmaker Atieva has selected a site in Arizona for a new $300 million manufacturing facility, according to tech news site Recode.

A private event at Atieva’s Menlo Park, California, office on Friday will unveil the design of its vehicle. Company officials have touted the vehicle as a rival to Tesla Motors Inc.’s cars, according to the Recode report.

The factory will be located in Casa Grande, a source told Recode. Atieva plans to build 20,000 cars a year at the facility and grow its output to 130,000 annually.

Casa Grande was previously one of the locations considered by Elon Musk‘s Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) for the $5 billion “Gigafactory” that eventually landed outside of Reno, Nevada.

Arizona pitched hard to land Tesla’s Gigafactory two years ago.

“Arizona is not going to want to lose out a second time,” a senior Atieva engineer who has since left the company told Recode. “Apparently, they’re throwing everything including the kitchen sink at Atieva to come to the state.”

That likely includes generous tax incentives for the carmaker, according to Recode.
