Officer Regan McCarthy and his sergeant arrived at a house fire in Goodyear before any firefighters made it to the scene on Tuesday.

“Sounded like small explosions going off in the garage,” McCarthy said of the fire near Interstate 10 and Estrella Parkway.

The officers learned there was a teenager who was trapped inside, so they sprinted to the back of the house. The voice was that of an 18-year-old man.

“Just kind of held my breath and got a little bit low to try to get through the thickest portion of the smoke.”

An 18-year-old man stumbled out.

It was a sigh of relief, followed by a breath of fresh air as the officers walked the man into the arms of medics.

“Makes it that much more rewarding when you get to come to work and make a difference,” McCarthy said.

The man is in serious condition and is recovering.
