Chicago Cubs last World Series hero Stan Hack celebrated in Glendale

In game 6 of the 1945 World Series, Cubs third baseman Stan Hack hit a walk-off double in the 12th inning to beat the Detroit Tigers.

Who knew then that 71 years later he would still be the Chicago Cubs most recent World Series hero?

At his home in Glendale, Stan Hack Jr. still celebrates his father’s legacy.

The walls behind the couch that Hack Jr. will watch the World Series from are adorn with pictures from his father’s playing career.  Stan Hack Jr. even has a bat from the 1945 season, when his father batted .323.

“His nickname was Smiling Stan. He had more friends than Leo Durocher had enemies,” said Hack Jr.

While Stan Jr would love to see the Cubs finally win a World Series for the first time since 1908, the fact that the Cubs won their first pennant since his father’s playing days is sitting pretty well in the Hack household.

“I got to be honest with you. Just getting to the World Series, I don’t want to say it’s enough but it sure gets a big monkey off our backs.”

His father’s famous game-winning hit can be seen here.

Stan Hack was a 5-time All-Star, a member of the Cubs All-Century Team and to this day many longtime baseball historians believe he should be in the Hall of Fame.

Stan Hack Jr. played baseball but in his words just wasn’t “Major League caliber”  Like so many kids who grew up in Illinois, his love of the Chicago Cubs runs deep and his wife Lora took this video when the Cubs won the National League Championship Series.

Stan will be thinking of his dad when the Cubs take the field against the Indians.

“We have a grandbaby on the way,” said Hack Jr. “It would be awesome if he was born the year the Cubs won the World Series.”

Stan Jr. will watch Wrigley Field swell to the rafters beginning with game three Friday night.

The number of young Cubs in the stands always catches his eye.

“I’ve been looking at some of these young people on TV and I’m just like you just don’t know what we’ve been going through!”
