Wahlstrom will finish coaching the track and field season, before moving on.

“The only things I know right now are that it is time to move on,” Wahlstrom said.

Last season, the Vipers went 7-4, and beat rival Goodyear Desert Edge for the first time in school history, a 6-3 double-overtime victory in the final regular-season game that spoiled Desert Edge’s quest for a perfect season. Desert Edge ended Verrado’s season next week in the first round of the 5A state playoffs, 34-10.

Verrado returns a strong team with running back Ja’tai Jenkins (853 yards, 14 touchdowns rushing last season) and up-and-coming quarterback Titan Widjaja, who completed 20 of 27 passes in spot duty as a sophomore.

Verrado went 10-2 two seasons ago, reaching the state semifinals, before losing a 34-27 game to eventual champion Desert Edge.

On Twitter “To Whom It May Concern,” and stated, “It has become increasingly apparent that my time at Verrado, however, has come to an end.

“Therefore, I’m resigning my position as Head Football Coach effective immediately and as Head Track Coach at the end of this season.”
