Local Government District 1 race going to runoff in November general election Buckeye Mayor Jackie Meck and Vice Mayor Michelle Hess were able to secure their seats for another four years Tuesday in the primary election. Newcomer Jeanine Guy will also join the council after winning District 2. Hess represents District 3 in Buckeye.The race for District 1 will move on to a runoff in the Nov. 8 general election, as none of the three candidates obtained the votes necessary to win the seat.Tony Youngker, who collected 279 votes, and Kathryn Baillie with 214 votes will face off in the next race. Ted Burton was eliminated with 167 votes.Youngker, 37, is owner and chef at Cafe 25:35 in downtown Buckeye. Baillie, 48, is an attorney at Napier, Coury, and Baillie, P.C.In the mayoral race, Meck received 55 percent of the votes cast. He was first elected mayor in 2008 and was re-elected in 2012. He also previously served on the council for several years.Meck, 75, is a former general manager of the Buckeye Water Conservation and Drainage District. He said the top issues facing the city are jobs and economic opportunities, followed by water.Challenger Brian McAchran, 47, has served on the council in District 1 for eight years and collected 31 percent of the votes. Thomas Campanella Jr., 55, got 13 percent.In the District 2 race, Guy received 64 percent of the votes, while challenger Joe Federico had 36 percent.Guy, 63, served various management roles for the city for more than 15 years in the 1990s and 2000s, including a term as city manager.Hess, 39, has served as the District 3 representative on the council since 2011 and was chosen to serve as vice mayor last year. She received 65 percent of the votes, while her challenger, Jarvis Berry, 42, had 35 percent.All election results are considered unofficial until the votes are canvassed by Maricopa County election officials later this week.
