A fireworks market explosion that emergency officials say killed at least 27 people and injured some 70 others.

The explosion happened just north of the Mexican capital.

Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto has offered his condolences to the victims of this latest blast.

Emergency workers say that number killed is only an initial estimate.

Rescuers on scene are still searching for survivors and television footage showed destroyed buildings and charred stalls.

A fireworks blast just before the country’s 2005 independence day celebration injured scores.
